Sure thou didst flourish once! and many springs,
Many bright mornings, much dew, many showers,
Pass’d o’er thy head; many light hearts and wings,
Which now are dead, lodg’d in thy living bowers. |
Cândva-nfloreai şi tu! şi mulţi prieri,
Mulţi zori şi multă rouă, multe ploi
S-au perindat; şi parcă până ieri
Mult păsăret îţi cuibărea prin foi. |
And still a new succession sings and flies;
Fresh groves grow up, and their green branches shoot
Towards the old and still enduring skies,
While the low violet thrives at their root. |
Noi ciripiri şi zboruri vin la rând,
Cresc noi dumbrăvi, din crengi subţiri smicele
Spre cerul vechi şi veşnic, sus, pe când
Ţi-aduni, lângă tulpină, viorele. |
But thou beneath the sad and heavy line
Of death, doth waste all senseless, cold, and dark;
Where not so much as dreams of light may shine,
Nor any thought of greenness, leaf, or bark. |
Dar tu pe tristul morţii drum te pierzi
Întreg, în bezne, ger şi uluire,
Acolo unde ram şi frunze verzi
Par numai, ca prin vis, o licărire. |
And yet—as if some deep hate and dissent,
Bred in thy growth betwixt high winds and thee,
Were still alive—thou dost great storms resent
Before they come, and know’st how near they be. |
Şi totuşi – când vreo duşmănie grea
Va bântui dinspre furtuni spre tine,
Ca-n viaţă, iar – ai s-o presimţi pre ea
Din depărtări, şi-ai să cunoşti că vine. |
Else all at rest thou liest, and the fierce breath
Of tempests can no more disturb thy ease;
But this thy strange resentment after death
Means only those who broke—in life—thy peace. |
Ci dacă-adormi de tot, viforniţi crunte
Tihnirii tale nu mai au ce-i face;
Iar după moarte spaima-ţi or s-o-nfrunte
Doar cei ce-n viaţă nu-ţi dădură pace. |

Tell me not (Sweet) I am unkind,
That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To war and arms I fly. |
Să nu mă cerţi, iubito, rău
Că – parcă dintr-un schit
Răzleţ – eu de la sânul tău
Spre lupte m-am pornit. |
True, a new mistress now I chase,
The first foe in the field;
And with a stronger faith embrace
A sword, a horse, a shield. |
Ispită nouă azi, ce-i drept,
Din duşman mi-am făcut,
Şi mai fidel strâng eu la piept
Un fier, un cal, un scut. |
Yet this inconstancy is such
As you too shall adore;
I could not love thee (Dear) so much,
Lov’d I not Honour more. |
Ci tu la fel de pătimaş
Îmi vei iubi schimbarea:
Nu te-aş iubi atât, de n-aş
Iubi mai mult onoarea. |

O, Nightingale, that on yon bloomy Spray
Warbl’st at eeve, when all the Woods are still,
Thou with fresh hope the Lovers heart dost fill,
While the jolly hours lead on propitious May,
Thy liquid notes that close the eye of Day,
First heard before the shallow Cuccoo’s bill
Portend success in love; O if Jove’s will
Have linkt that amorous power to thy soft lay,
Now timely sing, ere the rude Bird of Hate
Foretell my hopeles doom in som Grove ny:
As thou from yeer to yeer hast sung too late
For my relief; yet hadst no reason why,
Whether the Muse, or Love call thee his mate,
Both them I serve, and of their train am I. |
Prin crengi cu flori când, ah, privighetoare,
Cânţi seara-n câmpul mut, şi înteţeşti
În sufletul ibovnic noi nădejdi
La ceas, în luna mai, de desfătare –
Lin trilu-ţi face noaptea să coboare
(Nu viersul sec de cuc) şi prevesteşti
Izbânzi de-amor… Oh, dacă vreri zeieşti
Pe Eros l-ar lega de-a ta cântare!
Acum să-mi cânţi, cât ciuful cel sanchiu
Al urii încă nu m-a urgisit;
Căci parcă an de an mi-ai viersuit
A piază bună numai prea târziu…
Iar dacă-Amor şi muza te-au primit
Ortac – şi eu de-alaiul lor mă ţiu!… |

Margarita first possessed,
If I remember well, my breast,
Margarita first of all;
But when awhile the wanton maid
With my restless heart had played,
Martha took the flying ball. |
Prima, sufletul din mine
(De-mi aduc aminte bine)
Mi-l supuse Margareta!
S-a jucat cu el o toană
Şi, din zbor, altă codană
(Marta) i-a luat ştafeta. |

When thou, poor excommunicate
From all the joys of love, shalt see
The full reward and glorious fate
Which my strong faith shall purchase me,
Then curse thine own inconstancy. |
Când, biată anatemizată
De zeul Amor, vei vedea
Ce nalt destin şi ce răsplată
Primi-voi pentru cinstea mea,
Capriciile-ţi vei blestema! |
A fairer hand than thine shall cure
That heart which thy false oaths did wound;
And to my soul a soul more pure
Than thine shall by Love’s hand be bound,
And both with equal glory crowned. |
Un suflet ce-ai rănit, sperjură,
Mai dalbe mâini au să-l aline;
Cu-o altă inimă, mai pură,
Pe-a mea iubire va s-o-mbine,
Sub nimburi, ambele, senine. |
Then shalt thou weep, entreat, complain
To Love, as I did once to thee;
When all thy tears shall be as vain
As mine were then, for thou shalt be
Damned for thy false apostasy. |
Atunci, jelind, cerşi-vei iar
Iubirii – cum, cândva, eu ţie;
Ci fi-vor lacrămi în zadar
Ca şi-ale mele-altcând… Să-ţi fie
Osândă pentru-apostazie. |

Happy those early days! when I
Shin’d in my angel-infancy.
Before I understood this place
Appoint’d for my second race,
Or taught my soul to fancy ought
But a white, celestial thought,
When yet I had not walk’d above
A mile, or two, from my first love,
And looking back (at that short space,)
Could see a glimpse of his bright face;
When on some gild’d cloud or flower
My gazing soul would dwell an hour,
And in those weaker glories spy
Some shodows of eternity;
Before I taught my tongue to wound
My conscience with a sinful sound,
Or had the black art to dispence
A sev’ral sin to ev’ry sense,
But felt through all this fleshly dress
Bright shoots of everlastingness. |
Ferice vechi-zilele cele
Senine-ale juneţii mele!
Pe-atunci meleagu-acest mi l-aş
Fi hărăzit pentru urmaşi,
Iar sufletul mi-era-ndrumat
Doar spre ce-i sfânt şi nentinat;
Drum lung când nu mă despărţea
De-ntâia dragoste a mea,
Şi când, uitându-mă-ndărăt,
Puteam – scurt licăr – s-o mai văd;
Când la vreun nor de-argint sau floare
Priveam delung cu minunare,
Şi parcă-adulmecam în toate
Noptateca eternitate.
Nici nu-nvăţasem prin păcat
De conştiinţă joc să-mi bat,
Nici meşter nu eram să-ncui
În orice simţ păcatul lui,
Ci presimţeam cum se îmbie,
Spărgând trupescul strai, să-nvie
Voioşi vlăstari de veşnicie. |
O how I long to travel back
And tread again that ancient track!
That I might once more reach that plain,
Where first I left my glorious train,
From whence th’enlightened spirit sees
That shady city of palm trees;
But (ah!) my soul with too much stay
Is drunk, and staggers in the way.
Some men a forward motion love,
But I by backward steps would move,
And when this dust falls to the urn
In that state I came return. |
O, spre-a mă-ntoarce înapoi,
Ce multă cale bate-voi!
S-ajung din nou pe vechiul plai
Pe unde-ntâi mă răsfăţai;
De unde minţile-nvăţate
Zăresc a Palmilor Cetate
Dar lânced sufletu-mi e-acum,
Ca beat, şi pregetă la drum!
Se zbat s-ajungă unii hăt –
Eu cale-aş face-o îndărăt…
Dar nu mă voi întoarce până
Când tot ce sunt va fi ţărână. |
