Verbul a aprecia are de-a face cu examinarea şi evaluarea sub raport cantitativ şi calitativ, determinând preţul şi stabilind valoarea a ceva. Sau poate fi vorba despre preţuirea calităţii umane a cuiva, sens ce presupune sinonimia cu a cinsti, a considera, a onora, a respecta, a stima. În plan mental, orice socoteală, calcul sau potrivire din ochi şi cu rapiditate, orice considerare a unei situaţii, orice judecare a valorii (a unui spectacol de teatru, de exemplu), toate determină o concluzie, poate o credinţă chiar, referitoare la calitatea lucrurilor ce ne sunt înfăţişate. A woman sat in the crowded waiting room and became engrossed in a magazine. When the nurse called her name, she found her leg had gone to sleep and she limped awkwardly in to the doctor’s office. The doctor wrote a new prescription and two minutes later the woman walked briskly out into the waiting room again.
As she put on her coat, she noticed another patient staring at her in astonishment. The surprised patient poked her companion and whispered excitedly, „See, Betty? I told you he is the best doctor in town!”
