„A Song: Ask me no more where Jove bestows” de Thomas Carew

Ask me no more where Jove bestows,
When June is past, the fading rose;
For in your beauty’s orient deep
These flowers, as in their causes, sleep.
Să nu mă-ntrebi: spre toamnă, unde
Măcieşul Jupiter l-ascunde?
Căci în Levantul tău de nuri
Ca-n germeni dorm cele răsuri.
Ask me no more whither do stray
The golden atoms of the day;
For in pure love heaven did prepare
Those powders to enrich your hair.
Să nu-ntrebi: unde-ajung în zbor
De aur zorii zilelor?
Căci zeii-ţi ning, de drag, doar ţie
Pe păr cel colb de bogăţie.
Ask me no more whither doth haste
The nightingale, when May is past;
For in your sweet dividing throat
She winters, and keeps warm her note.
Să nu-ntrebi: când Florar se duce,
Privighetoarea unde fuge?
Căci, ca-ntr-un cuib, în gâtul tău
La cald iernează viersul său.
Ask me no more where those stars ’light,
That downwards fall in dead of night;
For in your eyes they sit, and there
Fixed become, as in their sphere.
Să nu-ntrebi: unde-au să coboare
La noapte stele căzătoare?
Căci ele-n ochi-ţi, pasămite,
Ca-n sfera lor stau ţintuite.
Ask me no more if east or west
The phoenix builds her spicy nest;
For unto you at last she flies,
And in your fragrant bosom dies.
Să nu-ntrebi: Fenix cuib îşi are
Spre Soare-Apune sau –Răsare?
Căci el îşi ia, când moare, zborul
Spre sânu-ţi, bunmirositorul.

„To My Inconstant Mistress” de Thomas Carew

When thou, poor excommunicate
From all the joys of love, shalt see
The full reward and glorious fate
Which my strong faith shall purchase me,
Then curse thine own inconstancy.
Când, biată anatemizată
De zeul Amor, vei vedea
Ce nalt destin şi ce răsplată
Primi-voi pentru cinstea mea,
Capriciile-ţi vei blestema!
A fairer hand than thine shall cure
That heart which thy false oaths did wound;
And to my soul a soul more pure
Than thine shall by Love’s hand be bound,
And both with equal glory crowned.
Un suflet ce-ai rănit, sperjură,
Mai dalbe mâini au să-l aline;
Cu-o altă inimă, mai pură,
Pe-a mea iubire va s-o-mbine,
Sub nimburi, ambele, senine.
Then shalt thou weep, entreat, complain
To Love, as I did once to thee;
When all thy tears shall be as vain
As mine were then, for thou shalt be
Damned for thy false apostasy.
Atunci, jelind, cerşi-vei iar
Iubirii – cum, cândva, eu ţie;
Ci fi-vor lacrămi în zadar
Ca şi-ale mele-altcând… Să-ţi fie
Osândă pentru-apostazie.

„The True Beauty” de Thomas Carew

He that loves a rosy cheek
Or a coral lip admires,
Or from star-like eyes doth seek
Fuel to maintain his fires;
As old Time makes these decay,
So his flames must waste away.
Chip de zână îndrăgeşti?
Buze roşii de mărgean?
Ochi cu scânteieri cereşti?
Cari să-ncingă-al tău alean?
Timpul ce nu stă pe loc,
O să stingă acest foc!
But a smooth and steadfast mind,
Gentle thoughts, and calm desires,
Hearts with equal love combined,
Kindle never-dying fires:—
Where these are not, I despise
Lovely cheeks or lips or eyes.
Cugetul nestrămutat,
Gândul blând, sfiosul dor,
Inimi ce iubesc curat,
Foc aprind nemuritor!
Făr-acestea, mă lipsesc
De obrazul îngeresc!
