An old rabbi is talking with one of his friends and says with a warm smile, „I gladdened seven hearts today.”

„Seven hearts?” asks the friend. „How did you do that?”

The rabbi strokes his beard and replies, „I performed three marriages.”

The friend looks at him quizzically. „Seven?” he asks. „I could understand six, but…”

„Well, I ask you,” says the rabbi, „do you think that I do this for free?”

All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand.

Merriam-Webster a ales un sufix mic, dar puternic, drept cuvântul anului: -ism. Dar nu orice „-ism”, ci sufixul termenilor cei mai căutaţi în dicţionarul online al companiei din 2015 şi anume, „socialism”, „fascism”, „racism”, „feminism”, „comunism”, „capitalism” şi „terrorism”.

„Am avut mulţi termeni în minte anul acesta,” a spus Peter Sokolowski, editorul companiei cu sediul în Springfield, Massachusetts. „E un an serios. Aceştia sunt termeni care desemnează idei şi acţiuni. Ne educăm singuri.”

Merriam-Webster urmăreşte ştirile respective care au legătură cu evenimentele din viaţa reală şi la care fac trimiteri prin accesarea unui cuvânt din dicţionar. Iar cercetătorii filtrează datele după termenii comuni accesaţi an după an atunci când îşi întocmesc topurile anuale de preferinţe.
