Drop it Ursachi
give up for heaven’s sake your wily addiction to poetry.
You who in your teens
wanted to become a shepherd, then
an employé with the „Fishing Administration”,
you who whiled away your sleepless nights
with Sanskrit, with Schlegel, with Bopp, why do you
plague printers, compositors, your chums, the decent
people (literary critics don’t matter. They’re far too sly
to read anything). Now look,
you’ve written another poem, once more you’ve been pulling
your own leg, better
turn into a tree, an electric boiler, or a cabbage.
Come off it, man.

„Rondelul jucătorului pierit” de Leonid Dimov

Era grădina ca un labirint
Şi, chiar la mijloc, o popicărie
Şi se vedea un jucător venind
Şi-n palma lui o barcă de hârtie.
Such were those gardens, like a maze, a maze,
And in their very midst a skittle-ground,
And I could see a player come apace,
And on his palm a paper boat, I found.
Doar râsete şi forme de argint
Mai rămâneau în seara zmeurie.
Era grădina ca un labirint
Şi, chiar în mijloc, o popicărie.
Laughs, only laughs, and shapes of silver blaze
Were left there in the raspberry skies around,
Such were those gardens, like a maze, a maze,
And in their very midst a skittle-ground.
Popicele-au căzut, alcătuind
Din clinchete şi râs o melodie,
Iar jucătorul, când am vrut să-l prind,
Ca la un semn pierise, căci pustie
Era grădina ca un labirint.
The skittles all had fallen in a craze
Of laughs commingled with a jingling sound.
The player had vanished out of these our days,
And empty were those gardens, as I found –
Such were those gardens, like a maze, a maze.

„Destin cu bile” de Leonid Dimov

Vaporul vechi cu două roţi uriaşe
Pluteşte pe sub poduri, prin oraşe,
Licori albastre, galbene, verzui
Pe puntea lui spălată, sorb dudui
Si cavaleri în frac cu mov joben
Ţinând de zgardă bile din eben:
Rotunde, roşii, cu desen subţire,
Ovale, verzi, cuprinse-n negre fire,
Cu clopoţei, cu ciucuri, cu lumini,
Cu trandafiri pictaţi, cu flori de crini,
Cu valsuri, cu parfum de liliac,
Chineze, cu dragoni şi vârcolac,
Franceze, cu perechi dansând gavote,
Barbare, cu imagini vizigote,
Si doamnele, ce râset ţes pe punte
Si cum dezleagă pălării şi funte
Când trec deşerte cheiuri şi palate
Cu monştri la fereşti iluminate.
Atunci, în noapte, când se schimbă garda
Aprind vedenii bilele şi zgarda
Iar domnii cu joben, încinşi în frac
Atoateştiutori, surâd şi tac,
Iar doamnele mai tare râd şi sorb
Cafele din felgean de fildeş orb.
The ancient steamer’s giant wheels draw furrows
Beneath high bridges as she floats through boroughs.
Damsels and beaux in tails, with mauve top hats,
Upon the clean-washed deck indulge in chats,
And sip clear liquids, greenish, yellow, azure,
While holding ebony balls in leash at leisure:
Some round, some red, exquisitely designed,
Some oval, green, by deep-black threads entwined,
With little bells, with tassels, and with light,
With painted rose, with lily-flower white,
With waltzes, with a wisp of lilac scent,
Chinese, with dragons and the werewolf’s dent,
French, with young pairs in a gavotte of froth,
Barbarian, with scenes of Visigoths –
And, oh, the ladies, how thei laugh on deck,
How they untie their bonnets at the neck
While sailing past deserted palace basements
With monsters showing in the lighted casements.
Then at the changing of the guard, at night,
The balls and leash strike many a ghastly sight.
In tail-coats and top hats, the beaux, unstirred,
Smile omnisciently and speak no word,
At wich the ladies’ laugh the louder rolls
While they sip coffe from blind ebony bowls.

„I Care Not for These Ladies” de Thomas Campion

I care not for these ladies,
That must be wooed and prayed:
Give me kind Amaryllis,
The wanton country maid.
Nature art disdaineth,
Her beauty is her own.
Her when we court and kiss,
She cries, “Forsooth, let go!”
But when we come where comfort is,
She never will say no.
If I love Amaryllis,
She gives me fruit and flowers:
But if we love these ladies,
We must give golden showers.
Give them gold, that sell love,
Give me the nut-brown lass,
Who, when we court and kiss,
Fiindcă o iubesc pe Amaryllis, ea îmi aduce fructe, flori;
She cries, “Forsooth, let go!”
But when we come where comfort is,
She never will say no.
These ladies must have pillows,
And beds by strangers wrought;
Give me a bower of willows,
Of moss and leaves unbought,
And fresh Amaryllis,
With milk and honey fed;
Who, when we court and kiss,
She cries, “Forsooth, let go!”
But when we come where comfort is,
She never will say no.
Mie daţi-mi umbră de sălcii, muşchi moale şi frunzele drept pat;

Erai
Nespus de înalt şi de subţire,
Ştiam de unde-ncepi
Şi unde mă sfârşesc,
Îţi găseam uşor
Buzele, gâtul,
Clavicula dulce,
Umărul copilăresc.
De mult, îmi amintesc,
Eram doi,
Ţin minte cum ne ţineam de mână…
Cine-a fost înfrânt dintre noi ?
Cine-a putut să rămână?
Singurul trup este al tău
Sau al meu?
Şi mi-e atât de dor
De cine?
Numai tăcând,
Cu ochii-nchişi, cu dinţii strânşi,
Mai pot să te distrug
Cu greu
În mine.
When you leave,
I don’t know which one of us has left.
When I stretch out my hand,
I don’t know if it not me
I am groping for.
When I say to you, „I love you”,
I don’t know if it not to me that I am saying it –
And I feel ashamed.
Once
I knew what you were like.
You were
So tall and so slender,
I knew where you began
And where I ended.
I could easily find
Your lips, your neck,
Your sweet collar bone,
Your boyish shoulder,
Long ago, I remember,
There were two of us,
I recall how we where holding hands –
Which of us was defeated?
Which of us managed to remain?
Is this one body yours
Or mine?
Only in silence,
With closed eyes, with clenched teeth,
I can still destroy you…
But how hard
Within me.

„Persistenţa flăcărilor” de Gellu Naum

Imaginile devorante ale lucrurilor viitoare
steaua aprinsă a unui incendiu
ceea ce am iubit ceea ce am sperat
ceea ce rămâne de cunoscut
The devouring images of things to come
the kindled star of a burning house
what we have loved what we have hoped for
what still remains to be known
Costumele acrobaţilor îşi păstrează vioiciunea
se reîncepe plimbarea somnambulică
pe frigul fragil între vis şi ape
între moarte şi veghe
între memorie şi asfixie
În această cameră atrăgătoare prin culoarea sicrielor
ţipătul tău se deschide ca o fereastră
The acrobats’ costumes preserve their gaudiness
the sleepwalking begins again
on a fragile tight rope between dream and waters
between death and vigil
between memory and choking
In this room attractive through the colours of its coffins
your shriek opens like a window
It’s time we knew the sleeping woman
that’s the only thing she’s wainting for
she’s watching with one languid eye
the bats that make their nests in our palms
