„Sonnet XXVIII” de Samuel Daniel

Reign in my thoughts, fair hand, sweet eye, rare voice:
Possess me whole, my heart’s triumvirate;
Yet heavy heart to make so hard a choice,
Of such as spoil thy poor afflicted stated.
For whilst they strive which shall be Lord of all,
All my poor life by them is trodden down;
They all erect their Trophies on my fall,
And yield me nought that gives them their renown.
When back I look, I sigh my freedom past,
And wail the state wherein I present stand,
And see my fortune ever like to last,
Finding me reign’d with such a heavy hand.
What can I do by yield, and yield I do,
And serve all three, and yet they spoil me too.
Iubito, frumuseţea-i strop de rouă
Povara dureroasă-a multor veri
Şi ţie într-o zi-ţi va da de veste
Că frumeseţea, vană, a fost ieri
Şi moartea prea departe nu mai este…
Dar, vai, femeii să nu-i spui cumva
Că într-o zi va-mbătrâni şi ea.

„Eulogy to Shakespeare” de Ben Jonson

To the memory of my beloved, MR. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: AND what he hath left us. Întru memoria preadragului meu AUTOR Mr. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE şi tot ce ne-a lăsat el nouă
To draw no envy (Shakespeare) on thy name,
Am I thus ample to thy Booke, and Fame;
While I confesse thy writings to be such,
As neither Man, nor Muse, can praise too much.
‘Tis true, and all men’s suffrage. But these wayes
Were not the paths I meant unto thy praise;
For seeliest Ignorance on these may light,
Which, when it sounds at best, but eccho’s right;
Or blinde Affection, which doth ne’re advance
The truth, but gropes, and urgeth all by chance;
Or crafty Malice, might pretend this praise,
And thine to ruine, where it seem’d to raise.
These are, as some infamous Baud, or Whore,
Should praise a Matron. What could hurt her more?
But thou art proofe against them, and indeed
Above th’ ill fortune of them, or the need.
Ca să te mântui, Shakespeare, de pizmaş,
Eu cărţii, faimei tale li-s chezaş.
Zic, deci, că nu pot muzele, nici omul
Să-ţi laude, pe cât se cade, tomul.
E drept, şi toţi te preţuie. Dar vreau,
Ca să te laud, alt făgaş să iau.
Căci ignoranţa bate calea veche
Sunând – ecou, şi-atâta – în ureche,
Ori oarba prefăcătorie care
Minţind slăveşte totul la-ntâmplare.
Sau poate fi maliţia şireată,
Slăvind făţarnic, când se surpe cată.
E ca şi când o târfă-ar vrea să dea
Preţ unei doamne… Hulă nu-i mai grea,
Ci tu scutit de ele eşti şi peste
Nevoile şi pacostele-aceste.

„Sonnet XLVI” de Samuel Daniel

Let others sing of knights and paladines
In aged accents and untimely words;
Paint shadows in imaginary lines
Which well the reach of their high wits records:
But I must sing of thee, and those fair eyes
Authentic shall my verse in time to come,
When yet th’ unborn shall say, „Lo where she lies
Whose beauty made him speak that else was dumb.”
These are the arks, the trophies I erect,
That fortify thy name against old age;
And these thy sacred virtues must protect
Against the dark, and time’s consuming rage.
Though th’ error of my youth they shall discover,
Suffice they show I liv’d and was thy lover.
Să cânte alţii – prinţii, paladinii
În stihuri vechi şi-n vraişte de cuvinte,
Pictând năluci în fanteziste linii
Ce numai geniul lor în zbor le prinde;
Ci eu de tine viersuri, şi de aceea
Ce scriu de ochii tăi e-adevărat –
Spre-a zice strănepoţii: Ea-i femeia,
Ai cărei nuri, un mut au vindecat.
În slove-i stela, cripta ce-ţi clădesc
Spre nenvechirea numelui să-ţi fie;
Şi ele zestrea sfântă ţi-o păzesc
De Beză şi de-a Timpului urgie.
Deşi nemeşter, versu-i semn vădit
C-am vieţuit cândva şi te-am iubit.

„The Lie” de Walter Raleigh

Go, Soul, the body’s guest,
Upon a thankless arrant:
Fear not to touch the best;
The truth shall be thy warrant:
Go, since I needs must die,
And give the world the lie.
Mergi, suflete, tu oaspe-al trupului,
Pe-o cale fară de răsplată;
Să nu te temi de duhu-naltului:
Ţi-e adevărul stea curată;
Tu mergi – pe mine moartea mă adună.
Iar lumii spune-i că-i minciună.
