What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare. |
Ce-i viața asta dacă-n griji scăldat
Nu ai răgaz de stat și de visat? |
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows. |
N-ai timp să stai sub ramuri de copaci
Privind la turmele de oi și vaci; |
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. |
Trecând prin codri n-ai timp să vezi unde
O veveriță nucile-și ascunde, |
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night. |
Pâraiele-nstelate în amiezi
Sticlind ca bolta în al nopții miez. |
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance. |
Să prinzi ocheada Mândrei nu ai când,
Nici să-i privești picioarele dansând; |
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began. |
S-aștepți până îmbogățește gura-i
Surâsul ce-l stârni căutătura-i. |
A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare. |
Rea-i viața asta dacă-n griji scăldat
Nu ai răgaz de stat și de visat… |

Since I have seen a bird one day,
His head pecked more than half-away;
That hopped about, with but one eye,
Ready to fight again, and die –
Ofttimes since then their private lives
Have spoilt that joy their music gives. |
De când o pasăre-am zărit
Cu capu-aproape ciugulit,
Tot țopăind zburlită, chioară,
Cu gând să lupte și să moară,
De-atunci, când viața mă îmbie,
Nu gust întreaga bucurie. |
So when I see this robin now,
Like a red apple on the bough,
And question why he sings so strong,
For love, or for the love of song;
Or sings, maybe, for that sweet rill
Whose silver tongue is never still – |
Și-acum, văzând acest prigor,
Roș măr pe ramu-mbietor,
Și neștiind ce triluri scoate
De dragoste sau libertate
Sau cântă poate undei Clare
Ce curge susurând la vale, |
Ah, now there comes this thought unkind,
Born of the knowledge in my mind:
He sings in triumph that last night
He killed his father in a fight;
And now he’ll take his mother’s blood –
The last strong rival for his food. |
Vai, ce gând rău îmi vine-n minte,
Născut din ce-mi aduc aminte;
Își cântă fapta cugetată:
Azi-noapte ucise pe-al său tată,
Și-acum vrea sângele de mamă,
La masa lui, rival de seamă. |

„That woman there is almost dead,
Her feet and hands like heavy lead;
Her cat’s gone out for his delight,
He will not come again this night. |
“Femeia asta dă să moară,
De plumb i-e trupul, o povară;
Motanul zburdă pe afară,
Și nu se-ntoarce astă-seară. |
„Her husband in a pothouse drinks,
Her daughter at a soldier winks;
Her son is at his sweetest game,
Teasing the cobbler old and lame. |
Prin cârciumi soțu-i umblă beat
Iar fata-i râde cu-un soldat;
Băiatul gustă-un joc barbar:
Îl sâcâie pe-un biet cizmar. |
„Now with these teeth that powder stones,
I’ll pick at one of her cheekbones:
When husband, son and daughter come,
They’ll soon see who was left at home.” |
Cu dinții care sfarmă totul
I-oi roade moartei nasul, botul;
Să vadă-ai ei venind acasă
Cam cine e stăpân în casă!” |
