„On the Way to Kew” de William Ernest Henley

On the way to Kew,
By the river old and gray,
Where in the Long Ago,
We laughed and loitered so,
I met a ghost to-day,
A ghost that told of you –
A ghost of old replies
And sweet, inscrutable eyes
Coming up from Richmond
As you used to do.
Pe drumul spre Kew,
Pe malul bătrânului râu cenuşiu
Pe unde-n Demultul Demult
Hoinăream şi râdeam amândoi,
Astăzi o umbră am întâlnit,
Şi-am stat s-o ascult,
O umbră care de tine spunea,
Dându-mi în şoaptă răspuns,
Cu ochi dulci, de nepătruns
Care din Richmond venea către Kew,
Aşa cum veneai altădată şi tu.
By the river old and gray,
The enchanted Long Ago
Murmured and smiled anew.
On the way to Kew,
March had the laugh of May,
The bare boughs looked aglow,
And old immortal words
Sang in my breast like birds,
Coming up from Richmond
As I used with you.
Pe malul bătrânului râu cenuşiu,
Demultul Demult cel de vrajă
Murmura şi zâmbea iaraşă zglobiuu,
Pe drumul spre Kew,
Martie-avea râsul lui Mai,
Flori vii izbucneau pe golaşe tulpine,
Şi toate cuvintele nemuritoare
Păsări în pieptu-mi erau, cântătoare,
Cum veneam dinspre Richmond
Ca pe vremuri cu tine.
With the life of Long Ago
Lived my thought of you.
By the river old and gray
Flowing his appointed way
As I watched I knew
What is good to know –
Not in vain, not in vain,
Shall I look for you again
Coming up from Richmond
On the way to Kew.
Cu zilele din Demultul Demult
S-a hrănit gândul meu despre tine.
Pe malul bătrânului râu cenuşiu
Ce curge pe-acelaşi făgaş cunoscut,
Aşa cum priveam, am ştiut
Ce-mi face atâta de bine să ştiu:
Nu-n zadar, nu-n zadar
Căutate-voi iarăşi şi iar,
Venind dinspre Richmond
Pe drumul spre Kew.

„I am the Reaper” de William Ernest Henley

I am the Reaper.
All things with heedful hook
Silent I gather.
Pale roses touched with the spring,
Tall corn in summer,
Fruits rich with autumn, and frail winter blossoms–
Reaping, still reaping–
All things with heedful hook
Timely I gather.
Eu sunt Culegătorul.
Cu grijuliul cosor eu câte toate
Tăcut le culeg,
Roze pale cu mângâiere de primăvară,
Grâu înalt vara-n toi,
Poame-mbogăţite de toamnă
Şi fragile flori ale iernii –
Culeg, întruna culeg –
Cu grijuliul cosor eu câte toate
La timp le culeg.
I am the Sower.
All the unbodied life
Runs through my seed-sheet.
Atom with atom wed,
Each quickening the other,
Fall through my hands, ever changing, still changeless.
Ceaselessly sowing,
Life, incorruptible life,
Flows from my seed-sheet.
Eu sunt Semănătorul,
Toată viaţa cea neîntreruptă
Trece prin traista mea cu seminţe,
Atom cununat cu atom,
Fiecare-nviindu-l pe celălalt,
Cad printre mâinile mele,
Veşnic schimbându-se, mereu neschimbaţi.
Neîncetat, semănând,
Viaţa, viaţa ce nu putrezeşte
Curge din traista mea cu seminţe.
Maker and breaker,
I am the ebb and the flood,
Here and Hereafter,
Sped through the tangle and coil
Of infinite nature,
Viewless and soundless I fashion all being.
Taker and giver,
I am the womb and the grave,
The Now and the Ever.
Făcător şi sfărâmător,
Eu sunt secarea şi revărsarea,
Aici şi Apoi.
Gonit prin încâlcişul şi vălmăşagul
Nesfârşitei naturi,
Pe nevăzute, pe neauzite
Eu plămădesc tot ce este fiinţă.
Primitor şi dăruitor,
Eu sunt pântecul şi mormântul,
Cel ce se cheamă Acum şi Deapururi.

„Invictus” de William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
Din bezna fără de hotar
Ce mă-mpresoară pe pământ,
Eu, căror zei or fi, dau har
Pentru-al meu cuget neînfrânt.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
În cruntă gheara-mprejurării
Nici n-am icnit, nici n-am ţipat.
Sub bâtele-ntâmplării, capul
Îmi sângeră, dar neplecat.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
Prin ciudă, lacrimi, suferinţă
Mijeşte Groaza umbrelor,
Ci anii ce mă ameninţă
Mă află tot netemător.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Cu fapte bune şi mai rele
Răbojul mi-e crestat mereu,
Dar sunt stăpânul sorţii mele:
Cârmaciul sufletului meu.

„Invictus” de William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
Trecând de noaptea grea din jurul meu,
Neagră ca iadul, fără de sfârşit,
Îi mulţumesc oricărui Dumnezeu
Pentru sufletul meu necucerit.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
În gheara sorţii strâns fără cruţare
Nu am dat înapoi şi n-am strigat
Lovit de întâmplările amare
Capul mi-e-nsângerat, dar nu plecat.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
Dincolo de blesteme şi de lacrimi,
Pe-acest tărâm de umbră subjugat,
În anii plini de-ameninţări şi patimi
Sunt şi voi fi la fel, neînfricat.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
Nu mai contează cât de aspru-i drumul,
Ce liste cu pedepse vin mereu,
Eu, azi, al sorţii mele sunt stăpânul –
Sunt căpitanul sufletului meu.
