„By the Babe Unborn” de G.K. Chesterton

If trees were tall and grasses short,
As in some crazy tale,
If here and there a sea were blue
Beyond the breaking pale,
De-ar fi mari pomii ca în basme
Și iarba de o șchioapă
Și s-ar ghici în depărtare
Albastru-ntins de apă;
If a fixed fire hung in the air
To warm me one day through,
If deep green hair grew on great hills,
I know what I should do.
De-ar atârna în aer flăcări
Zâmbind și înspre mine
Și munții ar fi verzi, m-aș prinde
Să fac ce se cuvine.
In dark I lie; dreaming that there
Are great eyes cold or kind,
And twisted streets and silent doors,
And living men behind.
Din bezna mea visez acolo
Ochi mari, blajini sau răi,
Străzi, uși, care-i ascund pe oameni
În tainice odăi.
Let storm clouds come: better an hour,
And leave to weep and fight,
Than all the ages I have ruled
The empires of the night.
Vreau nori – mai bine-o zi să sufăr,
Să plâng, să lupt, decât
Să-mpărățesc o veșnicie
’N al nopților urât.
I think that if they gave me leave
Within the world to stand,
I would be good through all the day
I spent in fairyland.
Eu unul am încredințarea
Că ei de m-ar primi,
Aș sta în țara fermecată
Cuminte-ntreaga zi.
They should not hear a word from me
Of selfishness or scorn,
If only I could find the door,
If only I were born.
Nu mi-ar păsa de mine, ura,
Bârfeala n-aș cunoaște,
Dacă-aș afla portița numai
Și-ntr-un sfârșit m-aș naște.

„The Wood-Cutter” de G.K. Chesterton

We came behind him by the wall,
My brethren drew their brands,
And they had strength to strike him down —
And I to bind his hands.
Pătruns-am dinspre zid; ceilalți
L-au însemnat – toți ei
Îl vor culca, eu am să-l leg
De brațe cu temei.
Only once, to a lantern gleam,
He turned his face from the wall,
And it was as the accusing angel’s face
On the day when the stars shall fall.
Și sub un licăr, de la zid
Și-a-ntors el fața sa
Ca de arhanghel mustrător
Când aștrii vor cădea.
I grasped the axe with shaking hands,
I stared at the grass I trod;
For I feared to see the whole bare heavens
Filled with the face of God.
Înfiorat, am luat securea,
Cu ochii în pământ:
Părea că-ntregul cer, senin,
E-un mare ochi de sfânt.
I struck: the serpentine slow blood
In four arms soaked the moss —
Before me, by the living Christ,
The blood ran in a cross.
Și am lovit. Din patru brațe
‘Ncepu să curgă sânge
În cruce; și-un covor de mușchi
Nu prididea a-l strânge.
Therefore I toil in forests here
And pile the wood in stacks,
And take no fee from shivering folk
Till I have cleansed the axe.
Eu în păduri lemnu-l așez
În stive-aici și-aiurea
Și nu iau plată de la oameni
Pân’ ce nu-mi șterg securea.
But for a curse God cleared my sight,
And where each tree doth grow
I see a life with awful eyes,
And I must lay it low.
Blestemul meu e să văd ochi
În orișicare pom
Atunci când îl despic, de parcă
Ar fi și pomul om.

„The Donkey” de G.K. Chesterton

When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.
Când pești zburau și codri-umblau
Și-n scai creștea năut
Și luna se-nroșise foc,
Atunci eu m-am născut:
With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.
Cu cap hidos, urechi zmeiești,
Glas ce din iad purcede,
De diavol parodie-am fost
Ales din patrupede.
The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.
Sunt un proscris al vrerii vechi
Și-al anticului crez;
Loviți, trosniți, rânjiți – sunt mut
Și taina mi-o păstrez.
Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.
Minți seci! Și eu am triumfat:
Când în urechi, mai ieri,
Zbierau atâți, iar eu călcam
Pe foi de palmieri.
