In harbours open to the mystery of great waters,
I have sung with fishermen, shadows high upon the shore,
dreaming of ships laden
with a strange miracle.
Near workmen in hot shirts of mail
I have raised steel bridges, over white rivers
higher than the flight of the pure bird
above the deep woods,
and every bridge arched
opening, it seemed, a way to myth.

„Lambert Hutchins” de Edgar Lee Masters

I have two monuments besides this granite obelisk:
One, the house I built on the hill,
With its spires, bay windows, and roof of slate;
The other, the lake-front in Chicago,
Where the railroad keeps a switching yard,
With whistling engines and crunching wheels,
And smoke and soot thrown over the city,
And the crash of cars along the boulevard,—
A blot like a hog-pen on the harbor
Of a great metropolis, foul as a sty.
I helped to give this heritage
To generations yet unborn, with my vote
In the House of Representatives,
And the lure of the thing was to be at rest
From the never-ending fright of need,
And to give my daughters gentle breeding,
And a sense of security in life.
But, you see, though I had the mansion house
And traveling passes and local distinction,
I could hear the whispers, whispers, whispers,
Wherever I went, and my daughters grew up
With a look as if someone were about to strike them;
And they married madly, helter-skelter,
Just to get out and have a change.
And what was the whole of the business worth?
Why, it wasn’t worth a damn!
Unde calea ferată îşi are depoul,
Cu privirea aceea temătoare ca şi cum erau gata de a fi lovite de cineva;
N-a meritat doi bani!

„Theory” de Dorothy Parker

Into love and out again,
Thus I went, and thus I go.
Spare your voice, and hold your pen-
Well and bitterly I know
All the songs were ever sung,
All the words were ever said;
Could it be, when I was young,
Some one dropped me on my head?
Ba-s îndrăgostită, ba deloc,
Astfel mă duc, astfel mă întorc.
Lasă vorba, pune jos stiloul:
Ştiu ce-i vechi şi ştiu şi noul,
Ce a fost cântec s-a cântat,
Toate vorbele s-au spus;
Când am fost mică, m-au lăsat,
Cred, în cap să cad, de sus.

„Harry Wilmans” de Edgar Lee Masters

I was just turned twenty-one,
And Henry Phipps, the Sunday-school superintendent,
Made a speech in Bindle’s Opera House.
“The honor of the flag must be upheld,” he said,
“Whether it be assailed by a barbarous tribe of Tagalogs
Or the greatest power in Europe.”
And we cheered and cheered the speech and the flag he waved
As he spoke.
And I went to the war in spite of my father,
And followed the flag till I saw it raised
By our camp in a rice field near Manila,
And all of us cheered and cheered it.
But there were flies and poisonous things;
And there was the deadly water,
And the cruel heat,
And the sickening, putrid food;
And the smell of the trench just back of the tents
Where the soldiers went to empty themselves;
And there were the whores who followed us, full of syphilis;
And beastly acts between ourselves or alone,
With bullying, hatred, degradation among us,
And days of loathing and nights of fear
To the hour of the charge through the steaming swamp,
Following the flag,
Till I fell with a scream, shot through the guts.
Now there’s a flag over me in Spoon River!
A flag! A flag!
Şi hrană fetidă, dezgustătoare;
Unde soldaţii mergeau să se uşureze;
Şi mai erau prostituatele care se târau în urma noastră, pline de sifilis;
Teroarea, ura, degradarea erau printre noi,
În aşteptarea orei de atac atac prin mlaştinile bolborositoare;

„On His Baldness” de Bai Juyi

At dawn I sighed to see my hairs fall;
At dusk I sighed to see my hairs fall.
For I dreaded the time when the last lock should go…
They are all gone and I do not mind at all!
În fiecare dimineaţă mă lamentam că-a început să-mi cadă părul;

„Arlo Will” de Edgar Lee Masters

Did you ever see an alligator
Come up to the air from the mud,
Staring blindly under the full glare of noon?
Have you seen the stabled horses at night
Tremble and start back at the sight of a lantern?
Have you ever walked in darkness
When an unknown door was open before you
And you stood, it seemed, in the light of a thousand candles
Of delicate wax?
Have you walked with the wind in your ears
And the sunlight about you
And found it suddenly shine with an inner splendor?
Out of the mud many times,
Before many doors of light,
Through many fields of splendor,
Where around your steps a soundless glory scatters
Like new-fallen snow,
Will you go through earth, O strong of soul,
And through unnumbered heavens
To the final flame!
