„Lonely Love” de Edmund Blunden

I love to see those loving and beloved
Whom Nature seems to have spited; unattractive,
Unnoticeable people, whose dry track
No honey-drop of praise, or understanding,
Or bare acknowledgement that they existed,
Perhaps yet moistened. Still, they make their world.
Nespus de dragi îmi sunt îndrăgostiții
Ce par nesocotiți de Firea însăși –
Urâți, oameni de rând cu traiul searbăd,
Necunoscând răsfăț sau vorbă bună,
Uitați, fără să știe că trăiesc;
Și, totuși, dânși au o lume-a lor.
She with her arm in his – O Fate, be kind,
Though late, be kind; let her never cause
To live outside her dream, nor unadore
This underling in body, mind and type,
No part from him what makes her dwarfish form
Take grace and fortune, envy’s antitone.
La brațul lui, ea ghemuită… Soartă!
Deși târziu, aibi milă! Lasă-i vraja
Ce și-a țesut în vis, n-o sfătui
Să nu-l iubeasă pe-acest prost schilod
Și nici pe el cumva să-și deie seama
Că trupul ei pitic stârnește plânsul.
I saw where through the plain a river and road
Ran quietly, and asked no more event
Than sun and rain and wind, and night and day,
Two walking – from what cruel show escaped?
Deformity, defect of mind their portion.
But I forgot the rest of that free day of mine,
And in what flowerful coils, what airy music
It led me there and on; those two I see
Who, loving, walking slowly, saw not me,
But shared with me the strangest happiness.
Pe câmp, acolo unde merg agale
Un râu și-un drum, cerând doar noapte, zi,
Lumină, ploaie, mi-a fost dat să văd
Doi tineri – din ce teatru crud scăpați?
Diformi, păreau că nu au mintea-ntregă.
Din gândul meu pieri orice “atunci”
Și-mi năvăli în suflet dulce zvon
Plin de miresme; ei nu m-au văzut –
Dar cum mergeau, îndrăgostiți, alene,
Le-mpărtășeam ciudata bucurie.

„Third Ypres” de Edmund Blunden

Triumph! How strange, how strong had triumph come
On weary hate of foul and endless war
When from its grey gravecloths awoke anew
The summer day. Among the tumbled wreck
Of fascinated lines and mounds the light was peering,
Half-smiling upon us, and our newfound pride;
The terror of the waiting night outlived,
The time too crowded for the heart to count
All the sharp cost in friends killed on the assault.
No hook of all the octopus had held us,
Here stood we trampling down the ancient tyrant.
So shouting dug we among the monstrous pits.
Amazing quiet fell upon the waste,
Quiet intolerable to those who felt
The hurrying batteries beyond the masking hills
For their new parley setting themsleves in array
In crafty fourms unmapped.
No, these, smiled faith,
Are dumb for the reason of their overthrow.
They move not back, they lie among the crews
Twisted and chocked, they’ll never speak again.
Only the copse where once might stand a shrine
Still clacked and suddenly hissed its bullets by.
The War would end, the Line was on the move,
And at a bound the impassable was passed.
We lay and waited with extravagant joy.
Triumf! Triumf bizar, muiat în ura
Războiului murdar și fără capăt,
Când s-a trezit o zi de vară
Din giulgiu-i sur. Lumina săgeta
Fascine, lut și apă, mângâind
Mândria noastră nou-născută; groaza
Înfriguratei așteptări nocturne
Slăbea iar timpul era prea-nțesat
Ca inima să-i numere pe morți.
După asalt, simțeam că am strivit
Tentaculele hidrei ancestrale,
Și chiuiam, săpând prin catacombe.
Pustia amuțise iar tăcerea
Ne-nnebunea căci dincolo de creste
Se regrupau, pe semne, baterii
Menite a-ntări parlamentarea.
Încrederea zâmbea; au amuțit
Căci sunt distruse; zac fără putere
În vraful morților – nu vor vorbi.
Dar crângul cu altarul în ruine
Mai azvârlea cartușe șuierate…
Va Lua sfârșit războiul, Linia
Se strămuta și, iată, ca prin farmec,
Fusese străbătut nestrăbătutul.
Extaziați, ședeam și așteptam.
