A woman sat in the crowded waiting room and became engrossed in a magazine. When the nurse called her name, she found her leg had gone to sleep and she limped awkwardly in to the doctor’s office. The doctor wrote a new prescription and two minutes later the woman walked briskly out into the waiting room again.
As she put on her coat, she noticed another patient staring at her in astonishment. The surprised patient poked her companion and whispered excitedly, „See, Betty? I told you he is the best doctor in town!”
Destul de cunoscuta expresie „put one’s best foot forward” (sau cum zicem noi, „a păşi cu dreptul”), deşi sună bine, suferă de o problemă gramaticală: în limba engleză superlativul se foloseşte doar când alegem dintr-un grup de trei sau mai multe elemente. Dacă sunt doar două elemente, atunci se foloseşte adjectivul comparativ corespunzător pe post de superlativ. Aşadar, cum omul are numai două picioare, ar fi trebuit să fie „put one’s better foot forward”.
Expresia este încetăţenită ca atare şi probabil nimeni nu o va mai putea schimba. O trecem la capitolul excepţii.
