„Harp Song of the Dane Women” de Rudyard Kipling

What is a woman that you forsake her,
And the hearth-fire and the home-acre,
To go with the old grey Widow-maker?
De ce părăsiţi voi pe doamnele dane,
Şi vatra şi-ograda de două pogoane,
Spre-a merge cu Baba-ce-face-vădane?
She has no house to lay a guest in-
But one chill bed for all to rest in,
That the pale suns and the stray bergs nest in.
Conac să primească un oaspăt ea n-are -
Doar balia rece, atotprimitoare,
În care se-ncuibă sori pali şi gheţare.
She has no strong white arms to fold you,
But the ten-times-fingering weed to hold you-
Out on the rocks where the tide has rolled you.
Ea n-are braţ alb să te-nlănţuie bine,
Ci numai cu alge-ncâlcite te ţine -
Pe stânci und’ te-aduce mareea când vine.
Yet, when the signs of summer thicken,
And the ice breaks, and the birch-buds quicken,
Yearly you turn from our side, and sicken-
Şi totuşi, când semnele verii sporesc
(Cad ţurţuri, mestecenii înmuguresc)
De-aici, an de an, alte ţări vă momesc -
Sicken again for the shouts and the slaughters.
You steal away to the lapping waters,
And look at your ship in her winter-quarters.
Momiţi de măceluri şi chiot, un jind
Vă mână să-ncepeţi al mării colind,
Spre-al bărcii ponton de iernare pândind.
You forget our mirth, and talk at the tables,
The kine in the shed and the horse in the stables-
To pitch her sides and go over her cables.
Uitaţi de petreceri, de şoltice dane,
De boii, de caii din grajd şi saivane -
Şi-umblaţi pe la navă cu smoală şi-otgoane.
Then you drive out where the storm-clouds swallow,
And the sound of your oar-blades, falling hollow,
Is all we have left through the months to follow.
Cârmiţi apoi unde-s, hăt, nori de furtună;
Şi sunetul vâslei ce-a groază răsună,
E tot ce ne leagănă lună de lună.
Ah, what is Woman that you forsake her,
And the hearth-fire and the home-acre,
To go with the old grey Widow-maker ?
De ce părăsiţi voi pe doamnele dane,
Şi vatra şi-ograda de două pogoane,
Spre-a merge cu Baba-ce-face-vădane?
