parley, parlay
Cuvintele „parley” şi „parlay” sunt foarte uşor de confundat. Ambele funcţionează atât ca substantiv, cât şi ca verb, dar ca sens nu au nicio legătură.
Mai des este întâlnit „parley„, care înseamnă „parlamentări”, „tratative”, respectiv „a parlamenta”, „a duce tratative”. De obicei se referă la discuţiile între tabere adverse.
Pe de altă parte, „parlay” este folosit în domeniul jocurilor de noroc, însemnând „pariere pe câştigurile anterioare”, respectiv „a paria pe câştigurile anterioare”.
Aşadar, atenţie: nu transformaţi negocierile în pariuri!

Apprentice Blacksmith
An apprentice blacksmith was told by his boss to make a hammer. The lad had not the slightest idea how to begin, so he thought he’d be crafty and slip out and buy one.
He duly showed the new hammer to his boss, who said, „That’s excellent boy! Now make fifty more just like it!”
