Expresiile „not good” şi „no good” par, la prima vedere, extrem de asemănătoare, ceea ce şi face să fie confundate uneori. La urma urmei, este acelaşi adjectiv, precedat de câte un cuvânt care sugerează o negaţie. Totuşi, există o diferenţă destul de importantă între ele.

Când spui despre o caracteristică folosind „not”, o anulezi în context. Nu foloseşti antonimul, pentru că ar fi prea mult sau pentru că vrei să fii mai blând în exprimare. Aşadar, „it’s not good” se traduce „nu e bun” (sau „bună”, după caz).

Pe de altă parte, „no” exclude toate variantele. Prin urmare, „no good” s-ar traduce (cam forţat) „de niciun bun”, ori cum se spune mai des în limba română, „de niciun folos”.
