„Surreal” („suprarealist”) este cuvântul anului 2016, după cum au ales cei de la Merriam-Webster. Înseamnă „marcat de intensa realitate iraţională a unui vis” sau „incredibil, fantastic”.
Termenul „surreal” nu a existat până prin 1924, când un grup de poeţi, pictori şi realizatori de film din Europa au fondat o mişcare pe care au botezat-o Suprarealism. Căutau să acceseze adevărurile minţii inconştiente dărâmând gândirea raţională. Abia din 1937 cuvântul „surreal” a început să funcţioneze de sine stătător.
