Nisip
Să se ştie
Said the Lion to the Lioness – ‘When you are amber dust, – No more a raging fire like the heat of the Sun (No liking but all lust) – Remember still the flowering of the amber blood and bone, The rippling of bright muscles like a sea, Remember the rose-prickles of bright paws |
Though we shall mate no more Till the fire of that sun the heart and the moon-cold bone are one.’ |
Said the Skeleton lying upon the sands of Time – ‘The great gold planet that is the mourning heat of the Sun Is greater than all gold, more powerful Than the tawny body of a Lion that fire consumes Like all that grows or leaps…so is the heart |
More powerful than all dust. Once I was Hercules Or Samson, strong as the pillars of the seas: But the flames of the heart consumed me, and the mind Is but a foolish wind.’ |
Așa e inima, ca pulberea mai tare. Hercule sau Samson am fost cândva, Puternic precum stâlpii mării, Dar focul inimii m-a mistuit iar mintea mea E doar smintită boare.” |
Said the Sun to the Moon – ‘When you are but a lonely white crone, And I, a dead King in my golden armour somewhere in a dark wood, Remember only this of our hopeless love That never till Time is done Will the fire of the heart and the fire of the mind be one.’ |

Triumph! How strange, how strong had triumph come On weary hate of foul and endless war When from its grey gravecloths awoke anew The summer day. Among the tumbled wreck Of fascinated lines and mounds the light was peering, Half-smiling upon us, and our newfound pride; The terror of the waiting night outlived, The time too crowded for the heart to count All the sharp cost in friends killed on the assault. No hook of all the octopus had held us, Here stood we trampling down the ancient tyrant. So shouting dug we among the monstrous pits. Amazing quiet fell upon the waste, Quiet intolerable to those who felt The hurrying batteries beyond the masking hills For their new parley setting themsleves in array In crafty fourms unmapped. No, these, smiled faith, Are dumb for the reason of their overthrow. They move not back, they lie among the crews Twisted and chocked, they’ll never speak again. Only the copse where once might stand a shrine Still clacked and suddenly hissed its bullets by. The War would end, the Line was on the move, And at a bound the impassable was passed. We lay and waited with extravagant joy. |
Triumf! |
Slow bleak awakening from the morning dream Brings me in contact with the sudden day. I am alive – this I. I let my fingers move along my body. Realization warns them, and my nerves Prepare their rapid messages and signals. While Memory begins recording, coding, Repeating; all the time Imagination Mutters: You’ll only die. |
Here’s a new day. O Pendulum move slowly! My usual clothes are waiting on their peg. I am alive – this I. And in a moment Habit, like a crane, Will bow its neck and dip its pulleyed cable, Gathering me, my body, and our garment, And swing me forth, oblivious of my question, Into the daylight – why? |
I think of all the others who awaken, And wonder if they go to meet the morning More valiantly than I; Nor asking of this Day they will be living: What have I done that I should be alive? O, can I not forget that I am living? How shall I reconcile the two conditions: Living, and yet – to die? |
Between the curtains the autumnal sunlight With lean and yellow finger points me out; The clock moans: Why? Why? Why? But suddenly, as if without a reason, Heart, Brain, and Body, and Imagination All gather in tumultuous joy together, Running like children down the path of morning To fields where they can play without a quarrel: A country I’d forgotten, but remember, And welcome with a cry. |
O cool glad pasture; living tree, tall corn, Great cliff, or languid sloping sand, cold sea, Waves; rivers curving; you, eternal flowers, Give me content, while I can think of you: Give me your living breath! Back to your rampart, Death. |
Umnroase lunci! Pom viu, grâu nalt, stei falnic, Nisip curgând molatic, rece mare, Pâraie, valuri și, voi, Flori eterne, Cât vă mai port în mine, dați-mi pacea, Suflarea voastră voie. Tu, moarte, du-te în chilie. |

Binecunoscutul adjectiv „hard” („My job is hard.„) este şi și adverb („I work as hard as I can.„).
Astfel, dacă „I work hard.”
Să mai observăm şi diferenţa dintre „I can hardly work.” şi „I hardly work.„.
Over that morn hung heaviness, until, Near sunless noon, we heard the ship’s bell beating A melancholy staccato on dead metal; Saw the bare-footed watch come running aft; Felt, far below, the sudden telegraph jangle Its harsh metallic challenge, thrice repeated: ‘Stand to. Half-speed ahead. Slow. Stop her!’ They stopped. The plunging pistons sank like a stopped heart: She held, she swayed, a hulk, a hollow carcass Of blistered iron that the grey-green, waveless, Unruffled tropic waters slapped languidly. |
Despovărați de zorii grei și-ncinși De-amiaza fără soare, -am auzit Bătaia clopotului de pe vas: Un trist stacatto pe metalul mort; Spre pupa, cartul alerga desculț, Jos telegraful clănțănea grozav Și ordona-ntreit: “La post! Jum’ate Viteză înainte! ‘Ncet! Stopați!” Și au stopat. Pistoanele adânci Au încetat, ca inima, să bată Și vasul a tăcut, s-a unduit, Schelet de bășicate fiare, Lins De sure, blânde ape tropicale. |
